The Wick as Spine
A candle is only as good as its wick. This is the first lesson every chandler learns, and the last they ever forget. The wick is not merely a thread of cotton; it is a fuel delivery system, a heat regulator, and a fragrance diffuser, all in one slender filament.
At Maison Royal, we use triple-braided cotton wicks, each one selected for the specific viscosity of its companion wax. A wick that is too thin will drown in its own pool. A wick that is too thick will smoke, soot, and throw a scent so aggressive it becomes a shout rather than a whisper.
The Mathematics of Placement
A wick must be centred to within one millimetre. Off-centre by two millimetres, and the wax pool will be asymmetrical; one side of the vessel will heat faster than the other, and the fragrance will be released unevenly. The candle will smell different depending on which side of the room you stand.
We use a brass centring tool, pressed into the wax at the moment of the pour, to hold the wick in perfect alignment as the wax cools and contracts. It is a small gesture, repeated thousands of times, that separates a clean burn from a disappointing one.
The Wick's Memory
Like wax, a wick remembers. A wick that has been allowed to mushroom will continue to mushroom. A wick that has been trimmed to five millimetres before every burn will burn clean for the life of the candle. This is why we include a brass wick trimmer with every Crown Edition — not as an accessory, but as an instrument.
The Flame as Conversation
When all elements are in harmony, the flame becomes something more than fire. It becomes a conversation between the wax, the wick, the vessel, and the air. It breathes. It dances. It releases fragrance in steady, even waves, filling a room not with a single note, but with the full architecture of the scent.
