The Art of Layering Scents

How to compose your own olfactory symphony

Élodie Marchand·August 15, 2026

The Principle of Harmony

Layering fragrances is an ancient art, practiced in the courts of Persia and the ateliers of Grasse. The principle is simple: no single scent should dominate. Each note must converse with the others, creating a harmony that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Begin with a base note, something deep and grounding. Oud, sandalwood, or amber work beautifully. Light this candle first, and let it fill the room for at least fifteen minutes before introducing the second scent.

The Architecture of Scent

Think of your space as a composition. The base note is the foundation, the cello in the orchestra. The heart note is the melody, rose, jasmine, or neroli. The top note is the sparkle , bergamot, citrus, or pink pepper.

The Ritual Light your base candle in the farthest corner of the room. Wait. Then light your heart candle near the center. Finally, if desired, introduce a top note near the window or doorway, where air movement will carry it gently through the space.

The result is not a blend, it is a journey. As you move through the room, the scent shifts, revealing different facets of the composition. This is the true luxury of layering: a fragrance that changes with you, that tells a story as you walk through it.

“Layering is not accumulation — it is conversation.”
